Both beloved and feared, the Titans are the new superpowers in the post-Wave world.Into this changed world are thrust Mercy Garner and her crew, trapped in time for fifty years and thought to be dead. They were the first to detect the Wave, the first to be hit by it, and the last to discover the changes the Wave brought to their world.

Book Titans Review :

Mr. Teasdale has penned another of his typically enjoyable yarns, though this time without much sex/kinkiness/romance at all ... which is what I usually like about his sci-fi and fantasy story crafting. This is a fun multi-genre story that begins several decades in the future when a small spaceship crew exploring Saturn’s moons discovers an approaching mysterious space time/gravitational event coming from the depths of outer space. They have enough time to warn Earth and prepare themselves and their ship and then ...... They wake up roughly 50 years later, their ship damaged, unable to contact anyone on Earth and several of them critically injured. All that was basically covered in the synopsis (what used to be the back cover, in the days of paper books), so I won’t spoil the rest - okay, except to explain why I subtracted a star.I get that superheroes are, well, super human. That’s the fun of it all. But sometimes things get carried so far that my willing suspension of disbelief collapses under the weight of the absurdity of it all.Characters that can teleport seemingly unlimited distances. What happens if you pop back into reality in the same space something else occupies, even something as small as a flying insect? A mosquito sharing same space as your brain wouldn’t do anything good. Seems to me it should be a last ditch emergency move, not something to do daily just to get around town.Flying through the air Superman-style at 200mph without a full-face helmet or even goggles - at that speed a bug to the eye might kill you, let alone a bird, and breathing at those speeds without face protection is problematic at best.Someone who can create complex machinery, including microcircuits and the like, out of literally nothing more than a thought and a wish - transmutation, but with nothing but air supplying the new matter?Characters that can alter or even stop time in a localized area and even at a slight remove from themselves.Even characters that can come back from the dead after sustaining massive physical damage, sometimes with the help of a supernatural healer, sometimes by their own inherent awesomeness. It’s fun to read about for a while and I know all about Clarke’s Three Laws, of which one is, “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” But too much becomes almost boring. If the most powerful characters are functionally immortal and can dish out god-like destruction or creation, it takes some of the urgency out of the proceedings. If Angus MacGyver had been immortal and able to create whatever he needed at the moment out of thin air just by thinking about it, or just teleport himself out of each episode’s dramatic difficulty, it wouldn’t have been much of a television show.Even if the heroine takes a pounding (critical proximity to a grenade explosion and three rounds through the heart, at different times) there’s little doubt she’ll be back, good as new on the next page and complaining about the new holes and scorch marks through her favorite coat. Those minor gripes aside, this was a lovely way to pass a few hours and there were enough twists and turns, character development and action to help me get past the excessive improbability of it all.I look forward to whatever the author comes up with next.If you’re looking for something similar to Mr. Teasdale’s style of storytelling, check out D.J. Bershaw, Noelle Alladania Meade, E. William Brown and K.B. Spangler.
Not a bad book, but too similar to Teasdale's Ultrahumans series without the sympathetic characters. The Titans plot has mostly been done before and in a better manner with Teasdale's earlier works. I'd like to see him continue his previous series before rehashing the ideas in a "new" series that, I feel, doesn't handle the subject as well as before. When Niall Teasdale creates a new series with new ideas, his writing is highly enjoyable, but when he comes out with books like Titans, it's "been there, done that" and it leaves me mildly annoyed to have spent the money to read something I've already read in a previous incarnation.
